1 cup Steen's Pure Cane Syrup
1 3/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup shortening
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ginger
2 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon


Heat syrup to boiling point in saucepan large enough for mixing cookies. Remove from heat; stir in shortening and baking soda. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and spices; add to syrup mixture. Chill 8 hours or overnight. Roll out dough 1/16 inch thick on lightly floured board or pastry cloth. Cut with cookie cutters. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes.

YIELD: 6 ½ dozen cookies
